Getting help for alcoholism is one of the best things that you can do for your body, your family and your entire community. Alcoholism is a disease that picks away at the good inside everyone, including yourself. Luckily, there are several sources of help for alcoholics.
One of the best sources of help for alcoholics is Alcoholics Anonymous. This is a group of alcoholic people who meet at a common place, whether it be at a church, community center, or other public location. These groups usually meet once or twice a week and work to kick their addiction to alcohol together. While some people are successful through this method, many people may need more serious help in order to get rid of their addiction for good.
More serious alcoholics may need a different type of help. Medical treatment is usually needed if you have become dependent on alcohol. If you think that you cannot live without alcohol, you are going to have to be part of a residential treatment program. These programs, popularly known as rehab, allow you to regain your health in a controlled environment. You typically will live at these programs anywhere from 30 days to six months. The length of the program usually depends on the severity of your addiction. Drug addiction recovery takes real work, and alcohol is one of the most difficult drugs to kick as an addiction. Your treatment program will include an intense period of withdrawal, followed by a period where you will get counseling and therapy in order to bring you back to a healthy lifestyle.
Another option for alcoholics, however not recommended, is to quit cold turkey. This method is tried by many alcoholics. They believe that they can just quit and not need to ever take another drink. While this is true for people who have not yet formed a dependency to alcohol, it is the exact opposite for people who are addicted. People who are addicted to alcohol will be back drinking alcohol within three to four days, maximum. This is due to the intense withdrawal from the alcohol.
However someone gets help for their alcohol addiction, they need to make sure they stick with it. Not sticking with your decision to quit can lead to increase usage, and ultimately death for many alcoholics. If you know someone who needs help, there are so many options out there for them. Make sure they look into the help for alcoholics that is open to them today.
