The Connection Between Alcoholism and Abuse

By Author | Mar 16, 2010

painEvery day across the globe countless people face abuse from someone close to them. Sometimes this is mental abuse and other times it is physical abuse. Many things can make a person become an abuser, but alcohol and family history probably top the list. Some people feel that abuse is only made worse by alcohol, while others feel that it is literally a cause of abuse. The truth is, they are both right. Alcohol can cause a person that normally would not abuse to do so, and it most certainly can make a person that abuses already worse.

The reasons for this is simple - alcohol is a mind altering thing. If you drink enough, you will become drunk and in some cases completely lose control. Once the control is gone, then the abuse can happen at any time. Another reason that alcohol and abuse are connected is because alcohol can bring out great levels of meanness and anger in a person. Some people become completely combative once they get a few drinks inside them.

For the person that is an alcoholic, this can be a problem that can lead to complete and total devastation. An abuser will almost certainly end up in prison at some time or another. They might even go so far as to take the life of someone that they purport to love. When you are under the influence of alcohol, you have no way of knowing how hard you are hitting, or control the safety of your situation. This can lead to heartbreak and devastation at the highest level both for the victim and the abuser.

Physical abuse is certainly one of the worst types, but mental abuse can be just as damaging. The alcoholic that becomes mentally and verbally abusive while drinking can be incredibly hurtful. Relationships can be completely obliterated in a very short period of time, regardless of the amount of love one might have for another. Mental abuse is sometimes slow to build, and sometimes it is very quick. Regardless, alcohol only makes the situation worse.

The alcoholic that abuses physically and mentally is the one that is most dangerous. These are the people that completely dominate and control their loved ones, and use violence to enforce that notion.

If you find yourself a victim of either physical or mental abuse, seek out help from your local police or shelter. There are places that you can go to get out of situations like this and you should not hesitate to do so. Your very life could depend on it.

If you are an alcoholic or an abuser or both, there is help out there for you as well if you truly want it. Seek help now before you find yourself completely out of control.
