The Power of Prayer in Addiction

By Author | Jun 1, 2010

beachWhile prayer is not something that some people believe in, it is a powerful way to overcome and deal with addiction. Most people believe in some type of higher power, whether they believe in God or not. This higher power is generally considered to be “with us” all the time. This friendship and relationship can be a huge boost to our daily fights and struggles with addiction if we harness the power behind it.

One of the worst parts of addiction is the feeling that you are alone. Many addicts feel that nobody else on earth could possibly know what we are feeling. As such, we find it hard to get much out of talking with others at times. Any conversation seems to be lacking, because there are no points of reference. Explaining the urge to put something in your body that might kill you is not something that the average person will understand or relate to.

Fortunately, prayer can give you that complete and total understanding that you seek when you need to talk. God has a way of reaching down and understanding and the peace that comes from prayer is not something you could get with even the best therapist. Therapy and self help are very important, but so too is a close relationship with your higher power.

Prayer is something that is available to you twenty four hours a day. You do not have to go chasing prayer. You do not need an appointment for prayer. You simply have to start talking, aloud or in your brain. For those that are not used to prayer, it will seem strange at first. You will feel silly. You have to push past that to get to the real power of prayer. Once you connect for the first time with God, you will never forget it.

God reaches into our lives in a million little ways. Most of that comes through prayer and reflection. When we are at our lowest, it is easier to connect with God. He wants to take on our pain, and will help us through the most difficult of times. He has no ulterior motives and He always has pure intentions. It is not God’s will for you to suffer with addiction, ever.

The next time you feel the need to scream out, try doing so with God. He has thick skin and can take whatever you dish out. Respect Him, but make sure you unload all that pain and hurt your addiction is causing. You will be amazed at how powerful and strong His shoulders really are. It simply takes an effort on your part to talk with Him. He will do the rest.
